Why it lands: 'If that's possible' is the moment the ask collapses. The tightened version names the number, the case, and the format. The manager can say yes, no, or counter. But they can't say 'let's revisit this later' as easily.

Why it lands: 'I've been working really hard' is the line that signals you're already defensive. The tightened version reframes the conversation as a choice your manager gets to make. Which is what good managers actually want from you.

I want to raise something hard. I've been considering whether this role is the right fit for me long-term. Specifically, I'm not getting the depth in [thing] I came here for. I'm not handing in notice; I want to figure out together whether there's a version of the role where that's possible. Can we make space to actually work on it?

Why it lands: Vague unhappiness is hard to respond to. The tightened version names the specific gap, the request, and the boundary (you're not quitting today). Which is what makes the conversation productive instead of awkward.

Common mistakes

What recruiters notice, even if they don't say it.

  • Bringing up the hard topic in the last five minutes. The conversation can't go anywhere meaningful in five minutes. Schedule it early in the 1:1 or in its own slot.
  • Softening so much the manager misses the ask. 'I was just wondering if maybe sometime we could possibly look at…' is a sentence with no center of gravity.
  • Not having a number. For raises, scope, headcount, deadlines. Bring the specific number you're asking for. Round numbers are fine; not having one isn't.
  • Treating it like a complaint instead of a proposal. Managers respond to choices. Give them two paths and your recommendation, not a list of things that are wrong.
  • Ending without a next step. 'I'll think about it and get back to you' is a graveyard. End with 'so by end of next week, we'll have decided X'. Even if X is small.

Why practise a 1:1. Isn't that overkill?

For the easy 1:1s, yes. For the one where you're asking for a raise, pushing back on scope, or saying you might leave. That's the conversation where 90 seconds of out-loud rehearsal changes the outcome. The cost is low and the asymmetry is huge.

What's the right way to ask for a raise?

One sentence: the number you want, the case (what you've shipped + market data), and the format (a doc your manager can read first, or a walk-through together). Don't soften the ask. The softening is what makes it easy to deflect.

How do I bring up something hard without making it awkward?

Name it directly in the first 15 seconds. 'I want to raise something hard'. Then say the specific thing. Naming the discomfort upfront makes the conversation safer, not less safe; the awkward version is the one that backs into it sideways for 90 seconds.

What if my manager goes defensive?
